The student unrest over the arrest of some youth Congress leaders from the Utkal University campus last week took a violent turn on Tuesday when angry students torched buses and damaged ATM machines in the Orissa capital.
The students,angry over the arrest of their leaders in connection with violence on the University campus,set atleast six buses on fire and damaged six ATMs apart from a branch office of a nationalised bank. Two private hospitals were also attacked,DCP Himanshu Lal,said.
The violence which began at around 2 am continued till noon with students stone-pelting the police in many parts of the city leading to at least a dozen people being injured. While Utkal University closed down indefinitely,most colleges remained closed on Tuesday as a mark of protest against the earlier police lathicharge against student leaders.
The agitation began after two rival student groups attacked each other at the University last week in connection with the students Council elections barely a month away. Six student leaders including Chinmoy Sahu,the state president of the students wing of the Congress,were arrested in connection with the incident. All of them were released on bail on Tuesday.
Meanwhile,keeping in view the statewide students agitation scheduled to begin from Wednesday in protest against the police lathi-charge on students of Utkal University,the Orissa government has beefed up security in all technical and non-technical institutions in the state.
