Order does not make demolition right: PC

Union Home Minister P Chidambaram on Friday said the Allahabad High Court judgment on the Ayodhya land title suits in no way justifies the demolition of Babri Masjid on December 6,1992.

Union Home Minister P Chidambaram on Friday said the Allahabad High Court judgment on the Ayodhya land title suits in no way justifies the demolition of Babri Masjid on December 6,1992. He also said there was no role for the central government now except to ensure that law and order and status quo are maintained.

Responding to a question whether the judgment will weaken or dilute the Babri Masjid demolition case, the Home Minister said,This judgment has nothing to do with the act that took place on December 6,1992. That,as found by the Liberhan Commission, was completely unacceptable. It was an act done by people who took the law into their own hands.

This judgment,in no way, justifies the demolition of the Babri Masjid mosque. That remains,in my view,a criminal act. So I dont think you should attribute to the honourable judges who wrote this judgment any intention to justify that act, he said.

Chidambaram said that no incidents had been reported to the Centre. We are, therefore, very pleased and satisfied that the response of the people of India has been respectful and dignified, he said.

The minister downplayed Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati8217;s remarks that the Centre would be responsible for any untoward incident. I thought that the government of UP is maintaining law and order with the assistance of the forces provided by the central government. If the UP governments view is that the Centre will maintain law and order with the assistance of the UP government,so be it, he said.
