Marathi film Pudhchi Tareekh to portray the life of Ujjwal Nikam, the public prosecutor in the 26/11 case

Ujjwal Nikam, the Special Public Prosecutor in the 26/11 case,is now an inspiration for a Marathi film Pudhchi Tareekh (Next Date). The film,by Pune-based director Svaddan Angrre, aims to portray the emotional tussle between public prosecutors’ professional and personal lives.

“Many films revolve around court cases and lawyers, but most tend to focus on one case at a time. In Pudhchi Tareekh we have tried to represent the travails of public prosecutors as a community of lawyers, their struggles and personal dilemmas. We’ve tried to show what transpires in the lawyers’ homes when a death sentence is passed,” says Angrre.

The storyline weaves together Nikam’s famous cases and has actor Sachin Khedekar essaying the role of Nikam. “It talks about the cases which are often referred to as the ‘pillars’ of Indian court cases — the 1993 Mumbai bomb blast case, the Khairlanji Dalit massacre case and the 26/11 case in which Ajmal Kasab was the only attacker to be captured alive,” says Angrre, who will depict reality, but abstains from taking real names in the film. “We wanted to make a film on the lines of the Sarkar series and Jhenda (Flag),” he adds.
