Now,TN AG fights lottery case

Giving a new twist to the lottery case defended by Congress spokesperson Abhishek Singhvi in the Kerala High Court.

Giving a new twist to the lottery case defended by Congress spokesperson Abhishek Singhvi in the Kerala High Court,Advocate General of Tamil Nadu P S Raman appeared in the same case on Monday, prompting protests from the state Congress unit, which has termed it as a breach of convention.

The senior lawyer, however, pointed out that he has been a counsel for Megha Distributors in the case for the past few years and that there was no bar on him taking up such cases in his professional capacity.

The case, which revolves around tax payment and allegations of fraud on lotteries of other states, has gained significance given that panchayat elections are round the corner in the state.

Singhvi has already taken the sting out of the Congresss campaign against the lottery mafia in the state by appearing for Megha Distributors.

Opposition leader Oommen Chandy on Tuesday said it was improper for the AG to do so as the case has become the single biggest electoral platform for the party in the coming panchayat elections.Chandy has now asked Kerala Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan to take it up with his Tamil Nadu counterpart M Karunanidhi.

Im writing a letter to the Chief Minister on Wednesday to urgently look into the matter, Chandy said.

AG Raman said: This is the fourth year I am representing the same company at the Kerala HC. What is different now is only the local politics in Kerala. Abhishek Singhvi is a politician, but I am not, said Raman.
