The CPM central leadership may have taken it in its stride, but the BJP on Tuesday hit out at Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi for his jibe at Kerala Chief Minister and Marxist veteran V S Achuthanandan over his advancing age.
Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha Sushma Swaraj described the barb as a complete non-application of mind by the Congress MP.
Rahul Gandhi forgot that the Congress has an alliance in Tamil Nadu with the DMK whose leader and Chief Minister Karunanidhi is also of the same age as Achuthanandan. There was complete lack of application of mind here, she said.
According to Swaraj,Congress president Sonia Gandhi more than once sought vote for the CPM-led LDF during her campaign speeches in Kerala.
There could be a typo error in the text of her speech, but she could have corrected herself and said UDF while delivering it or corrected later. This is again a non-application of mind, Swaraj said.
Swaraj referred to Union Minister V Narayansamys reported remarks at a womens gathering in Puducherry to back her charge that there was complete non-application of mind by the Congress.
Narayansamy told a womens gathering that we are giving you everything free except babies. We believe his remarks are most condemnable, she said.
Returning to Delhi after a hectic campaign tour,Swaraj said the BJP had mounted a very serious campaign in Kerala,Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. She claimed the party would not just open its account but will have an impressive presence and emerge as an effective opposition in the three states.
She said there was a strong anti-incumbency factor at work in the three states. Coupled with it was the utter disappointment of the people with the Centre in the wake of corruption scandals and price rise, she said.
