From 10 to 0: No former corporator left with Uddhav Thackeray as Pune civic polls near

The BJP on Tuesday inducted former corporators Prithviraj Sutar and Sanjay Bhosale from the Shiv Sena (UBT) into its fold.

Continuing its exercise of inducting leaders from the ruling and Opposition camps ahead of the Pune civic polls next month, the city BJP unit on Tuesday inducted two former corporators, Prithviraj Sutar and Sanjay Bhosale, from the Shiv Sena (UBT) into its fold. The development has now left the Shiv Sena (UBT) without any former corporators on its side.

In 2017, when the Pune Municipal Corporation elections were last held, the undivided Shiv Sena had 10 corporators, the third highest after the BJP and the NCP. When the Shiv Sena split in 2022 following a rebellion by Eknath Shinde, a majority of leaders from the party’s Pune unit stood by Uddhav Thackeray. Over time, however, the Shiv Sena (UBT)’s former corporators deserted the party.

Ahead of the Assembly elections last year, former Shiv Sena corporator Avinash Salve left and joined the Congress. Earlier this year, former corporators Bala Oswal of Upper Super Indiranagar, Vishal Dhanwade of Raviwar Peth, Sangeeta Thosar from Yeolewadi, Pallavi Jawale of Somwar Peth, and Prachi Alhat quit the Shiv Sena (UBT) and joined the BJP. Meanwhile, former Shiv Sena corporator Shweta Chavan joined the Ajit Pawar-led NCP two days ago.

Former Shiv Sena corporator Pramod Bhangire of Kausarbaug joined the Eknath Shinde faction and is the chief of the Shiv Sena’s city unit.

Leaders cite BJP’s Hindutva agenda

“Only the BJP is taking forward the Hindutva agenda in the country,” Prithviraj, who represented the Mayur Colony-Dahanukar Colony ward, said. The son of former Shiv Sena leader Shashikant Sutar, who was a minister in the Shiv Sena-BJP alliance government and a strong supporter of the late party chief Bal Thackeray, Prithviraj said the Shiv Sena (UBT) was a party that had lost among the Maha Vikas Aghadi allies.

Bhosale, who represented Yerawada, said it “was unfortunate” the Shiv Sena(UBT) had to beg for seats with MVA parties. “It was never right to ally with Congress or NCP. We were alerted on time and joined the BJP, which is taking forward the Hindutva agenda,” he said.

“The BJP-Shiv Sena alliance was based on Hindutva since the beginning, but the Sena under Uddhav Thackeray kept it aside while joining hands with Congress. The leaders in Pune have realised that only the BJP can take the Hindutva agenda forward and have joined the party. This is strengthening the BJP,” Murlidhar Mohol, Union minister and former Pune mayor, said.

“We are thinking of strengthening the BJP organisation and not inducting anyone with commitment on candidature,” he clarified.
