There seems no end in sight to the labour troubles of Tatas Taj Bengal Hotel in Kolkata.
Just last week, the ruling Trinamool Congress scuttled an attempt by its labour wing,INTTUC,to organise the hotels staff in a union and now INTUC,the labour wing of the Congress, has constituted a union.
On Friday, the union, which has drawn most of the employees who had joined the Trinamool venture before it was disbanded, held its first meeting during which members shouted slogans.
In all,293 of 383 employees of the hotel have joined our outfit. Most members had earlier enrolled themselves for the Trinamool union and they had to take shelter with us as they were targeted by the authorities. They were ditched by their leaders who are now playing second fiddle to the owners. But you can not take away the right to form a union from workers. I had sought permission of our president Sanjiv Reddy to form the union, Rakesh Singh, president of Taj Bengal Permanent Employees Union told The Indian Express.
We will soon send our charter of demands to the authorities.
The hotel management did not react to the development. State Congress chief Pradip Bhattacharya claimed he was not aware of the union. I can comment only after I get to know something. But I do not see anything wrong in setting up a union, Bhattacharya said.
Ramen Pandey, the working president of INTTUC,however, said he was aware of the development.
