Noida land scam: CBI asked

The Supreme Court on Monday directed the CBI to investigate allegations of official misconduct against former Noida CEO Ravi Mathur in the Noida land allotment scam.

The Supreme Court on Monday directed the CBI to investigate allegations of official misconduct against former Noida CEO Ravi Mathur in the Noida land allotment scam.

In this scam,former UP chief secretary Neera Yadav was found guilty of corruption and sentenced to four years’ jail term for corruption in December,2010. Her appeal is currently pending before the high court.

Ordering a preliminary inquiry into Mathur’s role,a bench of Justices G S Singhvi and B S Chauhan said the allegations against him were of a “very serious nature” and indicates colourable exercise of power to favour himself and certain contractors. The court said the agency is at liberty to launch criminal prosecution against Mathur if the allegations have “some substance”.

Mathur,a 1970 batch IAS officer,was Noida CEO from July 1993 to January 1994 and Greater Noida CEO from January 10,1994 to January 26,1995. The IAS officer is among several senior Noida officials,along with Yadav,who were made parties in a writ petition filed by Noida Entrepreneurs Association before the Supreme Court in 1997 highlighting alleged illegalities in the land allotments.

A total of 14 allegations against Mathur have been examined by the Chairman,Board of Revenue and report filed before the SC-appointed Justice K T Thomas Commission,entrusted to look into the scam,including why the UP government chose to drop disciplinary proceedings against several officials.
