Ajmal Amir Kasab, the lone terrorist captured alive in the Mumbai terror attack, has taken to reading the Quran and offering prayers in his special cell at the Arthur Road prison.

Kasab, whose request for newspapers was recently turned down by the jail authorities, gets up early in the morning and prays after which he reads the Quran, provided to him from the jail library, for over an hour. Kasab, who prays five times a day,has also been provided a cap to cover his head during prayer.

We have also provided him with three books in Urdu, one is a joke book given by his lawyer while the other two are a book of short stories with moral messages and a work of fiction. All these books are provided to him from the prison library and they are around 300 pages, which keeps him busy most of the time, jail officials said.

Kasab was first lodged in the Arthur Road Jail on February 17. Later,he was shifted to the high-security special cell next to the special Sessions Court built inside the prison.

Arthur Road Jail superintendent Swati Sathe said,Yes,we have given him the Quran to read. He had made a request to us to provide him with the holy book. A few other books have also been provided to keep him busy inside the cell.
