The United Liberation Front of Assam is no longer a group of boys with an ideology. They have become terrorists. Today, they do not spare anyone. Whether Assamese or non-Assamese,young or old, they are not bothered. For them it is just blood and life of innocent people. This is how Assam Police DGP G M Srivastava described the ULFA a day after its 30 anniversary.
DGP Srivastava also described ULFA armed wing chief Paresh Baruathough not mentioning his name even onceas someone who had not only lost his sensess, but also his identity as an Assamese. The man has no love left for the people of Assam8230; His conduct and character have changed, Srivastava said, adding that the ULFA was no longer a revolutionary group, but a terrorist outfit.
It was only on Monday that the ULFA struck again in the heart of Guwahati and killed at least nine people, despite the claims by the police and the Government that the state capital was under high alert and security. According to the DGPs own admission,as many as 49 persons have been killed in 16 explosions caused by the group.
The DGP claimed the blast happened despite the best efforts by the police. Three ULFA militants have been around. We know their names. We have released the photographs of two of them. But since they can no longer come face to face with security forces, all they are doing is stealthily sneaking into the city and triggering off explosions, Srivastava said.
On the serial blasts of October 30 which had left over 90 dead and nearly 500 injured in Guwahati and three other towns, the Assam Police chief said the investigations by the CBI were proceeding in the right direction. He,however, said three ULFA militants wanted in the serial blasts case had already crossed over to Bangladesh.
