No deal on troops cut on border

The government has strongly denied reports in the Pakistani media that a deal has been worked out between the two countries to reduce troops on the border

The government has strongly denied reports in the Pakistani media that a deal has been worked out between the two countries to reduce troops on the border.

A report in the Express Tribune had said that the two countries had reached an understanding on withdrawal of troops during the meeting between Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and President Asif Ali Zardari on April 8 to thin out troops on the border.

The report published in Express Tribune,Islamabad edition, dated May 14,2012,that India may move troops to peace time locations is completely incorrect and without any basis. There are no such plans, said a Defence Ministry statement.

While the report said that a formal withdrawal would be announced in September-October,sources in the Defence Ministry said there is no such move and that the report is totally baseless.

The Express Tribune also said troops that had been deployed after the 2008 Mumbai attack would be withdrawn.

However, sources pointed out that there was no scaling up of troops on the border by India after the attack.
