In another confirmation of the declining clout of HRD Minister Arjun Singh, the Congress has denied a ticket to his daughter from Satna parliamentary constituency in Madhya Pradesh. Earlier, the party had denied Sidhi constituency to his son.
Late on Thursday, the party announced the nomination of Sudhir Singh Tomar, dashing the hopes of Beena Singh to contest from Satna, bordering the familys hometown of Sidhi. Though she has never contested either Assembly or parliamentary elections before, her claim was holding up the nomination.
Ministers son Ajeya Singh was a contender for the Sidhi seat but the party preferred veteran Indrajit Patel, who had lost the recent Assembly elections. The Congress had won only one out of the eight Assembly seats in Sidhi.
Ajeya Singh, who won by a margin of less than 11,000 votes from Churhat, was the chairman of the Congress election affairs committee in 2008. Though the party improved its tally to 71 in the 230-member House,he did not play any major role because he remained stuck in his constituency. Ajeya Singh staked a claim for Sidhi after the reserved SC seat changed to general after delimitation.
The HRD Minister, meanwhile, put up a brave face, appealing to his supporters to rally around the partys choice in his pocketborough.
