Protesters chanting russia without putin began marching through Moscow on Saturday in a protest seen as a test of the oppositions ability to mount a sustained challenge to President Vladimir Putin. Several thousand demonstrators marched from central Pushkin Square. Some had banners,others wore T-shirts demanding the release of three jailed members of the Pussy Riot punk band.
China VP finally re-appears in public
Chinese leader-in-waiting xi Jinping appeared in public on Saturday for the first time in about two weeks,visiting a Beijing university in what appeared to be an effort to dispel rumours of serious illness and a troubled succession. In a brief English-language report that broke the official silence on his whereabouts,the Xinhua news agency said Vice President Xi had arrived at China Agricultural University in the morning for activities to mark National Science Popularisation Day.
Anti-Japan protests in China turn violent
Protests against japan over control of disputed islands spread across more than 28 cities in China and turned violent on Saturday,with protesters hurling rocks at the Japanese embassy and clashing with paramilitary police before order was restored. Thousands of protesters gathered in front of the Japan embassy in Beijing. Kyodo News agency said more than 60,000 people protested.
