The National Disaster Management Authority NDMA has compiled a set of guidelines on the management of drought which describe the phenomenon of drought,the efforts made so far to control them by diverse organisations and institutions and make several important and far-reaching recommendations on the measures to be taken by the Central and the state governments and other selected agencies.
Recently released by NDMA Vice Chairman General retired N C Vij,the National Disaster Management Guidelines 8211; Management of Drought will act as a base for state governments and union territories to prepare their drought management plans,implementation of which are expected to minimize drought hazards.
The guidelines for drought management have been formulated after a nine-step process in which various central ministries and departments and the states governments were fully taken on board. The process included wide consultations with scientific and technical institutions,academics,technocrats and humanitarian organisations.
The draft guidelines documents were circulated to all the ministries and departments at the Centre and in the states for their feedback and all workable suggestions have been incorporated.
