Naveen acts tough,sacks former minister

The move comes just days after Nayak accused the Naveen government of being involved in several scams

In a clear warning to squabbling partymen,Orissa Chief Minister and BJD president Naveen Patnaik on Sunday evening suspended his one-time close aide and former minister Debasis Nayak from the party. The move comes just days after Nayak accused the Naveen government of being involved in several scams.

Nayak,51,who was officer-on-special duty to Naveen when the latter was Union Steel and Mines minister in the Vajpayee government in 1997 and then a minister under the BJD chief, was suspended for his anti party activities,a one-line communique from the BJD said.

Though the action was expected in view of Nayaks open criticism of Naveens governance style,it came at a time when the regional party is facing massive intra-party feud. A senior leader recently accused Naveen to be a lame-duck chief minister. Nayak refused to comment on the suspension. Nayak, who was minister of sports and youth services under Naveen during his second term as chief minister, had said that Naveen cant escape the taint of various scams and scandals that are slowly surrounding the government.

It was Nayak who had last year written a letter to the vigilance department about alleged irregularities in the purchase of pulses for mid-day meals in schools and anganwadi centres. Though the vigilance started a probe into the scam,Nayak alleged the investigations were slowed down after it it came to light that several higher officials were involved in the scam.
