The newly constituted board of governors of the Medical Council of India MCI has proposed a common entrance test for undergraduate courses and one for post-graduate courses in medicine from next year.

While the MCI is yet to work on the modalities, the board of governors head Dr Shiv Kumar Sarin said consultations were on with the Union Health Ministry and a go-ahead was expected soon. The board has also approached the Central Board of Secondary Education CBSE to formulate the details for conducting this test, replacing all other exams conducted for admission in government and private medical colleges in the country.

CBSE chief Vineet Joshi said,The MCI has indicated about the common entrance test for medicine and we welcome the step. We are in discussion with the the Director General of Health Services and MCI on this issue and we will do whatever is possible from our side in the interest of students.

The MCI board of governors has also approached several private medical colleges, which have given their approval for it. The test will cover all private, government and minority institutions.

According to Dr Sarin, the common entrance test will make the process simple. Every college conducts its test, which unnecessarily creates that hassle of hopping from one place to another for the students and parents, he said.

As the board works on the modalities,it is clear a common merit list will be drawn from results of the test. For example,it may be decided AIIMS will take the first 1-20 students, Dr Sarin added. According to Dr Devi Shetty,a member of the board,a single entrance test would reduce stress the students.

Every year, admission tests are conducted for nearly 32,000 undergraduate seats and 13,000 post graduate seats in medical colleges across the country.
