Ludhiana acid attack victim succumbs to injuries

Harpreet was attacked on December 7 in a beauty parlour hours before her wedding ceremony.

Harpreet Kaur,the 22-year-old woman who was a victim of acid attack on her wedding day in Ludhiana,died of multiple-organ failure at the National Burns Centre in Mumbai Friday morning.

Harpreet was attacked on December 7 in a beauty parlour hours before her wedding ceremony. A group of youths threw acid on her allegedly at the behest of her fiance’s former sister-in-law,who wanted to take revenge from the groom’s family. She,along with five youth,were subsequently arrested.

Harpreet received over 45 per cent burns and struggled for 20 days. She was air-lifted from Ludhiana’s Dayanand Medical College and Hospital to Mumbai two weeks ago.

She was operated upon twice but the burns were deep,and had affected her liver,kidney and heart.

Harpreet and her family had come to Ludhiana from Barnala because the groom,Honey Singh,was from Doraha and the marriage was to be held at a resort here.

But hours before the ceremony,Parwinder Singh and his cousin Sunneypreet Singh and friends Gurtej Singh and Rakesh and Jaspreet Singh from Amloh,allegedly threw acid at her.

The alleged mastermind in this case was Honey’s former sister-in-law Amitpal Kaur,whom his elder brother had divorced a year ago.

Police Commissioner Nirmal Singh Dhillon said revenge was the motive for the attack. All the accused will be charged with murder,he said.

Harpreet’s body is being brought back to her home in Barnala by the Ludhiana Police and the cremation is scheduled for Saturday.
