Lt Gen Dalbir Singh appointed Vice Chief

While Lt Gen M M S Rai will take over the Eastern Command.

The government has designated Eastern Army Commander Lt Gen Dalbir Singh as the next Vice Chief of Army Staff. He will take charge at the end of this month after Lt Gen S K Singh retires from service.

Lt Gen Dalbir Singh,who does not use his Suhag surname for Army records,is also slated to take over as the next Army Chief after Gen Bikram Singh retires from service next year.

Along with Lt Gen Dalbir Singh,the government has also announced the appointment of two new army commanders who will take charge of the Eastern and South Western Commands by the end of this month.

While Lt Gen M M S Rai will take over the Eastern Command,the South Western Command will be headed by Lt Gen Arun Kumar Sahni. Rai is from the Corps of Enginners and Sahni is an Artillery officer.

Lt Gen Dalbir Singh belongs to the 4/5 Gorkha Rifles.

Officials have dismissed reports that the government is looking at appointing a new four star General as a permanent Chairman of the Chiefs of Staff Committee.
