Let the dance begin

Looks like we are going to be a country of only singers and dancers if the growing number of song and dance talent hunts on TV is anything to go by!

Looks like we are going to be a country of only singers and dancers if the growing number of song and dance talent hunts on TV is anything to go by! The latest to unleash 40 young dancers on the hapless viewer is Chak Dhoom Dhoom, to be aired on Colors from April 30. Choreographers Saroj Khan and Ahmed Khan will look out for those with perfect expressions, technique and dance moves (P 3 they call it) while Bigg Boss winner Vindu Dara Singh is expected to weep copiously with every elimination (remember those scary Bigg Boss episodes on Fridays, when Amitabh Bachchan would make Vindu cry even with innocuous questions). Pravesh Rana, the first runner up of Bigg Boss will co-host the show with Chhote Miyan Saloni Daini. And looking at her in action,in her Hip-Hop,uber cool avatar,we felt the show could have done without Rana.
The launch event gave us a sneak peek at six contestants, the youngest of whom, believe or faint, danced to Madhuri Dixits Maar daala. Uff,those adas she displayed on stage….everyone was eating out of her tiny hands…We particularly liked a Chinese kid who had smart moves and a silky crop of hair and yes, those crinkly eyes had the women definitely swooning especially when he danced to Doli mein bithake…. Saawariya. We have a complaint though. We didnt like the way Rana chose to call him Fried Rice. Funny? No,we dont think so.
Both Saroj and Ahmed Khan said they are scared of these kids because they are super smart, super talented and make you want to retire from dancing. The older Khan in her trademark caustic manner later said that she is not a hawk who will criticize them. You have got to be careful with children. They are like soft clay. Ahmed,on his part, recently made a film Paathshaala which ironically is against these very reality shows. But he says,I will ensure the children dont go disheartened or dejected. Its only when makers keep an eye on TRPs and make the children sense that, then its a problem.
And with Dance India Dance Little Masters around the same time,we guess, its going to be a helluva fight to the finish on the TRP charts.

Shakti wins Dance India Dance
After the intense battle between four finalists,it was Shakti Mohan who walked away with the Sunheri Taqdeer Ki Topi(The Golden hat) in Lux Dance India Dance. She also won a contract of Rs. 50 lakhs with Zee TV,a Wagon-R car and an exclusive opportunity to star in Farah Khans Tees Maar Khan. The finale had Ranbir Kapoor and Prakash Jha as special guests. The evening was packed with performances by the finalists Binny,Dharmesh,Shakti and Puneet. Even their mentors,Remo and Terrence, gave some sizzling performances. While Remo did a medley of Michael Jacksons chartbusters,Terence made a zip-line entry seated atop the Avatar bird. Punit performed on Dhoom title track,Shakti did a jig on Shut up n bounce & Chamma chamma,Binny staged a mermaid act to Mar jawaan and Dharmesh danced on a giant cassette player. Even grand master Mithun Chakraborty was at his playful best ragging host Jay Bhanushali alongwith Saumya Tandon.

Divyanka is back
Divyanka Tripathi aka Vidya of Banoo Mein Tumhari Dulhann who was missing in action for the past one year is back in a SAB TV serial Mr & Mrs Sharma Allahabadwale. A sitcom,it has Divyanka playing Mrs Rashmi Sharma who alongwith her husband comes to Mumbai from Allahabad and soon gets entangled in the day-to-day problems faced by Mumbaites ranging from water shortage to traffic snarls. For the Sharmas thats not a problem at all because Rashmi thinks they are the most intelligent people on the earth and how they go about tackling the issues is what the serial is all about, says Divyanka who had taken a break from acting. After doing Dulhann for three years I wanted a break. I did get a lot of offers specially in the last three months but the roles were similar to what I had done in Dulhann. Mr & Mrs Sharma was the first comedy serial that came my way and I took it up because I wanted to learn this genre, she smiles. The actress is happy that Rajesh Kumar, her co-star,has already done many comedies. He is teaching me to do comedy and I am teaching him how to romance, grins Divyanka rushing to give a shot. Incidentally, the serial is scheduled to start airing from May 17.

The silent act
Bhavana Balsaver, who is currently seen in Gutar Gu,Indias first silent comedy on TV ,says the biggest challenge is to convey her characters emotions in the show without any dialogues. Since there arent dialogues,we need to exaggerate the actions to convey emotions. A lot of physical action is involved. My theatre background really came in handy as body language is important while acting in plays and the gestures are usually louder than normal, informs the actress. Bhavana is playing the protagonist Balus (Sunil Grover) doting mother. Initially, she was not sure how the show would fare. But the concept excited her and she gave her nod immediately. However, before Gutar Gu,Bhavana was maintaining a low profile and was conspicuous by her absence on television. She was last seen in shows like Paani Puri and Ruby, that didnt have a long run on the small screen. Quiz her about it and she says,I was getting offers but none of them excited me. Rather than doing every role that came my way,I preferred opting for something more challenging. During this interim period,Bhavana gave a voiceover for two characters in the recently released animation film Bird Idol. The movie revolves around the happenings at a singing contest for birds. She reveals it was a novel experience as the director first asked her to enact the birds mannerisms, then filmed it and consequently used it as reference point for the animation. I have given the voiceover for two completely diverse characters. While the first is the protagonist who ages over a period of time in the film, the second character is a wacky judge for whom I had to put on an accent, she explains. Bhavana is also busy with her Hindi play Mera Naam Joker. The play, which is her home production, has been penned by her and has been running for almost a year. It will be soon staged at Dubai,Muscat and the Middle East.

Alekh,Sadhna romance in Bidaai
Love is blossoming between Alekh (Angad Hasija) and Sadhna (Sara Khan) in Rajan Shahi’s Sapna Babul Ka Bidaai. The story has taken an interesting turn after Alekh’s transformation. He is not only supporting Sadhna completely but has also informed his parents that he wants her back as his wife. We must say the duo makes a perfect couple onscreen. Sara and Angad have reportedly shed oodles of weight. While Sara has knocked off 10 kilos,Angad has lost more than six kilos. After all,not every actor takes so much pain to look appealing on television. Both of them have a huge fan following and audiences can’t have enough of their onscreen romance.
