San Fran transit jams cellphones to prevent stir

SAN FRANCISCO: Transit officials blocked cellphone reception in San Francisco train stations for three hours Thursday to disrupt planned protests over the July 3 shooting of Charles Blair Hill by BART police. Officials with the Bay Area Rapid Transit system BART,said they turned off electricity to cellular towers in four stations from 4 pm to 7 pm,after they learned that protesters planned to use mobile devices to coordinate a demonstration on train platforms. BART officials are showing themselves to be of a mind with Hosni Mubarak, the Electronic Frontier Foundation said on its website. BART officials,however,were confident the cellphone disruptions were legal.

Bodies of 5 cops,3 intel agents recovered in Afghanistan

Kabul: Afghan security forces have recovered the bodies of five policemen and three intelligence agents who were kidnapped by insurgents two days ago in eastern Afghanistan,an official said Saturday. The bodies were discovered late Friday and taken to the provincial capital city of Maidan Shahr early Saturday,said provincial spokesman Shahidullah Shahid. He added that three suspected insurgents have been arrested in connection with the kidnapping and killings.

Rebels claim capture of Tripoli gateway

Wadi El-Hai: Libyas rebels claimed to have captured Gharyan,a key mountain town that is a strategic gateway on the road to Tripoli,driving out forces loyal to Muammar Gaddafi on Saturday in an intensified offensive aiming to push toward Gaddafis stronghold in the capital. Gharyan lies at the northern end of the Nafusa Mountains.

Syrian tanks enter Latakia,gunfire heard

BEIRUT: Syrian tanks and armoured vehicles swept into the coastal city of Latakia on Saturday and gunfire was heard in a district where thousands had protested against President Bashar al-Assad,an activist group said. The deployment took place a day after security forces shot dead 20 people during nationwide marches in which demonstrators vowed to kneel only to God. Heavy gunfire could be heard until midday,and people were reportedly fleeing the area.
