The Tardeo police in Mumbai Thursday launched a search for an unidentified biker who allegedly rammed into a traffic police constable during a roadblock on New Year’s Eve and fled the scene.
The incident occurred when the biker was being stopped for a check as part of a drive against drunk driving drive. The biker allegedly accelerated and escaped after hitting the constable. The injured constable, identified as Ashish Nigot, fell on the road and sustained injuries to his hand and leg.
Initially, doctors suspected a fracture in his hand, but an X-ray later confirmed that it was a blunt injury with no fracture. He has been admitted to Nair Hospital, a police officer said.
According to the police, the roadblock was set up near the NSCI Club, where personnel from both the Tardeo and traffic police were deployed. Barricades were placed across two lanes to slow traffic and allow officers to check motorists and bikers for alcohol consumption.
The police said that at around 3.30 am Thursday, a biker heading southbound approached the naka at high speed. Nigot and another constable signalled him to slow down and stop near the barricades.
Although the biker initially reduced his speed, he suddenly accelerated upon reaching Nigot and rammed into the victim, the police said. The bike’s handle struck Nigot, and due to the impact, he fell on the road, an officer said.
“The roadblock was carried out to check for drunk driving. The police indicated to the biker to stop when he was approaching, but the biker did not stop and hit the police constable,” said Savalaram Salgaonkar, Senior Inspector of the Tardeo police station.
Constable Chandrakant Sonawane rushed Nigot to Nair Hospital. “He is currently undergoing treatment and his condition is said to be stable,” Salgaonkar added.
The police reviewed CCTV footage from the area and traced the motorcycle’s registration number. Efforts are underway to identify and locate the biker. Once apprehended, it will be determined whether he was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident.
An FIR has been registered against the unidentified biker under Sections 281 (rash driving), 195(a) [assaulting, obstructing, or using criminal force against a public servant], and 134(a)(b) [assault or criminal force during an attempted theft] of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), along with Section 184 of the Motor Vehicles Act, an officer said.
