KOLKATA: The condition of Marxist patriarch Jyoti Basu was stable and he was responding positively to treatment for pneumonia,doctors attending on him said on Saturday. However,the 95-year-old leader would continue to be under observation for a few more days in ICU at the AMRI Hospital here. His condition is so far stable and he is positively responding to treatment at the ICU where he might have to stay for two to three days more, a five-member medical board formed to monitor his health condition said.

PM to open Science Congress today

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Leading space scientists of the world will deliberate on key areas of research at a space summit here as part of the 97th Indian Science Congress to be inaugurated by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Sunday. The five-day event,which is the largest congregation of scientific community in the country,would see participation of 7,000 scientists.

MP town continues to be under curfew

SHAJAPUR MP: Curfew remained in force for the second day on Saturday in nearby Maksi town which witnessed violence after the death of a youth during a cricket match,the police said. There was no relaxation in the curfew. No untoward incident was reported on Saturday in the town,25 km from here,where an indefinite curfew was clamped on Friday evening after the death of a person and injuries to five in a clash between two groups,DIG Ujjain Range Varun Kapoor said.

Assam: Train runs over 4 elephants

GUWAHATI: Four wild elephants were killed when a speeding train knocked them down between Daldali and Diphu railway stations in Karbi Anglong district on Friday night. A senior forest official in Diphu said the elephants were killed when they were trying to cross the railway track that passes by the Daldali reserved forest. The Northeast Frontier Railway authorities however maintained that only one elephant was killed when a goods train carrying oil tankers hit it near Daldali railway station.

Landmine hoax hits train services

JHARGRAM WB: Train services on the Kharagpur-Tatanagar route of the South-Eastern Railway were disrupted on Saturday after a landmine hoax by Maoists created panic in West Midnapore district. A pilot train along with a team of security forces rushed to the spot near Jhargram railway station after a driver of the Howrah-bound Sambalpur Express noticed some banners and a tiffin-box with wires spread out lying on the tracks in the wee hours. Inspection by a bomb-disposal squad later revealed absence of any explosives,the police said.

Inquiry ordered into tanker fire,says VS

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Kerala Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan on Saturday said a comprehensive inquiry had been ordered into the LPG tanker blaze at Karunagappally in Kollam on Thursday,which claimed seven lives. A compensation of Rs 5 lakh would be given to the next of kin of those killed in the accident.

Man lynched by kin for Rs 100 in Bihar

BEGUSARAI: One person was beaten to death by angry relatives at Rajaura village in Bihars Begusarai district late on Friday night,the police said. Ranjit Das picked up a quarrel with his relatives over returning Rs 100 he had borrowed from one of them,the police said. His relatives beat him to death with sticks,the police said. Three persons have been held in this connection.
