Kingfisher Airlines asked to compensate passenger

Kingfisher Airlines has been asked by the country’s apex consumer forum to pay over Rs 26,000 to a doctor.

Kingfisher Airlines has been asked by the country’s apex consumer forum to pay over Rs 26,000 to an Agartala-based doctor for inconveniencing him endlessly during a flight with it to Mumbai and back in 2007.

The National Consumer Dispute Redressal Commission (NCDRC) ordered the Airlines to pay Rs 26,000 to Dr J L Roy,holding the airlines guilty of rendering deficient service by taking him on a whirlwind tour, involving three landings and take-offs,instead of putting him on a direct flight to Mumbai.

“For a passenger travelling from Agartala to Mumbai in a single day,the most acceptable route will be the shortest and most direct flight available. The stop at Hyderabad can, therefore,by no stretch of imagination,be treated as a matter of facility or convenience,” NCDRC bench of Justice R K Batta and Member Vinay kumar said.

The NCDRC also faulted the airlines for mishandling Roy’s luggage, for which it asked him in Kolkata to pay another Rs 1,400 for taking it onward to Mumbai and instead of flying him and his luggage directly to Mumbai,he was first flown to Hyderabad.

“Passenger was travelling from Agartala to Mumbai by the same Airlines, though on different flights, the luggage should have been directly booked from Agartala to Mumbai, instead of being handed over to complainant at Kolkata,” the NCDRC said.
