Just two days after INLD chief Om Prakash Chautala retracted his statement backing the suggestion of Haryana khaps to lower the marriageable age of girls to curb rape incidents, senior leaders of Sarv Khap Mahapanchayat at a meeting dismissed the suggestion as an independent viewpoint of a few of its leaders and not a decision taken by the khaps. Another meeting will be held on October 19 to take a decision on the issue.
SKM president Nafe Singh Nain, who presided over the meeting, said: We shall soon be passing a resolution by discussing the issue with the representatives of other communities and then take a decision.
The statement came after a special meeting of around 100 Haryana khaps was convened in Sonepats Jat Dharamsala. Khap leader Sube Singh also attended the meet and said that his comment on reducing age of marriage was his personal opinion The suggestion was my personal view and not of the khaps.
There was a lot of discussion on the suggestion of lowering the marriage age. However,no decision has been taken. Though everybody criticised incidents of rape, there were mixed reactions on lowering the marriageable age. Since the khaps are mainly dominated by Jats,we did not want to take a decision. This gives an impression that Jats are imposing the decision on other communities. This is why we shall be convening another meeting on October 19 in which representatives of all other communities will be invited and a decision shall be taken, Singh added.
Discussions were also held on obscene content in the media,he said.
