Concerned over the pace of awarding projects in the highways sector, road transport minister CP Joshi has asked the industry to come forward with suggestions to revive the sector.
I would be very happy,if you could come out with the possible reasons for the recent sudden slowdown. As partners in this sector,it is imperative that we put our heads together and resolve issues,if any, that are hindering progress, Joshi said at an infrastructure summit organised by industry body Ficci.
Joshi also said that he is concerned about bids not being received or single bids being received even in well structured projects.
We have made earnest efforts to understand the reasons thereof and wish to resolve the issues, he added.
The road transport ministry,in May,had also called a meeting of the industry to discuss ways to resolve problems being faced by them in financing and implementation of highway projects.
The road transport ministry and the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) awarded road projects covering 7,957 km,has until now failed to receive bids for 6 projects in the current fiscal. They have been able to award projects covering over 100 km till now.
Industry analysts feel that awarding of projects in smaller ticket sizes would be the key to getting in participation from the industry that is facing a financial crunch.
