The law intern who has accused Justice (retd) A K Ganguly of sexually harassing her,has written to the Delhi Police, saying she was currently travelling, and would discuss the matter later. The police had sent a second email to the woman on Thursday, asking her for an appointment to record her statement. The pressure on the police to act has increased since a three-judge panel of the Supreme Court found the retired judge prima facie guilty of unwelcome conduct of sexual nature with the lawyer who was interning with him in December 2012. Top sources in the police said they were seeing the lawyers reply, received on Saturday morning,as a positive step. If she gives a statement,a case under Sections 354 (molestation) and 509 (word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman) of the IPC is made out. If she says she is ready to give a statement,we will send a team to record her statement, a senior Delhi Police officer said. Police sources said the woman was presently in Kolkata. Pressure on Justice Ganguly to resign as chairperson of the West Bengal Human Rights Commission, meanwhile, continued to mount on Saturday. Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha Sushma Swaraj announced on Twitter that the BJP would raise the matter in Parliament, and the Trinamool Congress said they would give notice for a discussion under Rule 193. Someone who has violated human rights cannot continue as Chairman of Human Rights Commission. We will raise this matter in Parliament, Swaraj tweeted. She has been calling for Ganguly's resignation for nearly a week now. Leader of the Opposition in Rajya Sabha Arun Jaitley too has made a similar demand, criticising the SCs stance that it cannot take action against a retired judge. In Kolkata,Kalyan Banerjee,Trinamool chief whip in Lok Sabha, told PTI: We will raise the issue and give notice under Rule 193 for a discussion in respect of conduct of Justice Ganguly and demanding his resignation from the post of the chairman of the West Bengal Human Rights Commission. Another TMC MP,Saugata Roy,said it was good that the BJP was planning to raise the matter in Parliament. We have no objection, Roy said. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee who has been in a running battle with Justice Ganguly over orders passed by the WBHRC has already written to President Pranab Mukherjee seeking urgent action to remove the chairperson from his post. Also in Kolkata,Minister of State for Railways Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury said even though the Trinamool was trying to settle old scores with Justice Ganguly,in view of the Supreme Court indictment,it would be better if he quit his post on moral grounds. In view of the ramifications of the incident,I think,on moral grounds,it is better that Justice Ganguly should resign and face the consequences. I wish he comes out with flying colours, PTI quoted Chowdhury as saying. A member of the National Commission for Women (NCW) met Deputy Commissioner of Police (New Delhi) S B S Tyagi to discuss the matter on Saturday. The NCW member, advocate Nirmala Samant Prabhavalkar, told The Sunday Express,I met the DCP New Delhi and asked him what action the police had taken on the report of the Supreme Court. The response of the police has been good. Only when the woman gives a complaint will the matter move forward. Based on the statement given by her, prima facie,an offence is made out. We need to give the police some time to probe the matter.
