Facing the most serious crisis of his tenure as chairman of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change IPCC,R K Pachauri on Saturday rejected demands for his resignation and said a single error could not be used to trash the credibility of the UN panel headed by him.

Addressing his first press conference after the IPCC admitted to having gone wrong on the claim that Himalayan glaciers would disappear by 2035,Pachauri said he was concentrating on the next task of bringing out the fifth assessment report that is scheduled for release in 2013-14.

Those who are asking for my resignation will have to be disappointed. I have a job at hand. The fifth assessment report is in the making and I am going to ensure that this report is done well and strengthens the science on climate change, Pachauri, who is also the director general of The Energy and Resources Institute TERI,said.

The revelations about the 2035 date being completely off the mark has come as the latest trouble for Pachauri who was already being attacked from certain quarters for allegedly using his position in the IPCC for personal gains. There has been an error. The IPCC has already said that the procedures which ought to have been followed were not completely followed in one particular instance. That doesn8217;t mean the entire report is wrong or that global warming is not happening or that Himalayan glaciers are not melting, Pachauri said.

I don8217;t think there is any crisis of credibility with the IPCC. IPCC is still very well regarded and respected by a vast majority of people across the world and I think that is how it will be, Pachauri said.
