High expectations from Abir

Talk about Bangaliana and Byomkesh Bakshi comes to the collective mind of an entire generation that grew up reading about the exploits of Sharadindu Bandopadhyays intelligent, urbane detective.

I thoroughly enjoyed the interview of young Bengali actor Abir Chatterjee,The New Sleuth,Screen,September 3 after the release of his much-acclaimed film Byomkesh Bakshi.

Talk about Bangaliana and Byomkesh Bakshi comes to the collective mind of an entire generation that grew up reading about the exploits of Sharadindu Bandopadhyays intelligent, urbane detective. It becomes very difficult for a popular actor to become a legendary character.

Director Anjan Dutt took the route of taking a not-so-known but talented actor in Abir, who played the protagonist. Clad in a traditional pristine, starched dhoti-kurta,with a cigarette dangling between his lips,Abir Chatterjee certainly looked the part. Abir sported glasses for his role,an enhancement that was denied to Bakshi by his original creator, but his physical appearance went very well with the authors creation.

I think it is an honour for Abir to start off with such a legendary character and hope that the young six-footer also knows the responsibility the character brings with it.
