In Mumbai to pay tribute to the victims of the 26/11 attack,US envoy Timothy Roemer on Monday assured that Indian investigators would soon get access to Pakistani-American Lashkar operative David Headley.

Calling India an indispensable ally in the fight against terror,Roemer said Pakistan needed to do a lot more to curb terrorism while it was also essential that India and Pakistan continue to hold talks.

The door has been opened, and it is up to India to walk through it at the appropriate time, Roemer said on Indias access to Headley. He did not, however, specify a timeframe.

Roemer was speaking to journalists at the memorial outside the Mumbai Police Gymkhana, after paying tribute to the 18 security personnel killed on 26/11. Earlier,he had also visited Dharavi and interacted with slumdwellers.

Laying a wreath on the memorial,Roemer said,This is my third visit to this historic city and it is a very special place. Secretary Hillary Clinton had requested me to show our respect to the brave policemen who laid down their lives during the Mumbai attack and their wives, and families.

He added that in 1998,in a similar experience for the US,two policemen had lost their lives on duty on Capitol Hill, and stressed the significance of the sacrifices made by law-enforcement officers in protecting members of the society.

On Pakistan,he said,Secretary Clinton has in the past few days made very strong comments on Pakistans role in curbing terrorism. While Pakistan has done a lot to curtail terrorism,it needs to do a lot more to ensure that the US and India are safe from terrorist attacks. It is also important for India and Pakistan to talk to one another. How,and what to talk to each other on,will be decided by the two nations.
