Hasina cancels Kolkata visit

Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will not attend the convocation ceremony of Calcutta University

Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will not attend the convocation ceremony of Calcutta University.

After Governor M K Narayanan made an announcement to the effect at a programme here on Thursday,Vice-Chancellor Prof Suranjan Das said the university could not delay its convocation because of Hasinas absence. We might have to do it without her. She has communicated that she is busy and cannot find time to attend the ceremony, he said.

Experts in political circles believe Hasina might have cancelled her visit because Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee backed out of the Indo-Bangla Teesta Water Treaty. The Bangladesh PM visited Tripura last month and has refused to come to our state now. This is a clear indication how the government has failed to keep a cordial relationship with Bangladesh, said a senior CPM leader.

Urban Development Minister Firhad Hakim, however, said: She cannot come due to time constraints and nothing else should be speculated. It will definitely not affect the relationship between the two countries.
