‘Govt might consider import of sugar’

The Government might look at importing sugar to meet the shortfall and keep the rising prices of the commodity under control,a leading economist said.

The Government might look at importing sugar to meet the shortfall and keep the rising prices of the commodity under control,a leading economist said.

“The Government is likely to import more sugar to meet the current shortfall and also to put a check on the rising price of the essential commodity,” NCDEX’s Chief Economist Madan Sabnavis,said.

Currently,sugar prices have climbed to an all-time high of Rs 40 per kg.

The Government is likely to import sugar after the end of the harvest season in April.

While the demand for sugar is 23-million tonnes,only around 15-million tonnes was produced last season due to scanty rainfall.
