Former CPM MP switches to JDU

In a major jolt to the CPM and big boost to CM Nitish Kumar before the Assembly elections,CPMs central committee member and former Bhagalpur MP Subodh Roy on Wednesday joined JDU in a low-key function here in the presence of state party president Vijay Kumar Choudhary.

Roy,who had never changed his party in his long political career, surprised everyone by joining JDU. I want to be more realistic than a Marxist. As CPM does not have many public representatives in Bihar, there was little scope to work for the poor. With a vibrant party like JDU,I will get chances to work for the poor, he said.

Roy,while refraining from criticising the CPM,showered praised on Nitish: I am greatly impressed by Nitish Kumars works. Entire society is rid of fear factor now. Nitishji has also been committed to the cause of the downtrodden.

When asked about the urgency to quit CPM despite holding a key position,Roy parried the question, saying the Nitish-led JDU attracted him. As anti-development forces have been after Nitish,I wanted to extend my help to the JD-U, he said.

A member of the Central Committee for the past 15 years,Roy was expelled by the CPM Politburo earlier in the day. A brief Politburo statement said it has summarily expelled Roy from primary membership for grave anti-party activities with immediate effect.
