Exactly four months after a 20-year-old German tourist was gangraped after being abducted from Hotel Taj in Chandigarh on the night of September 27 last year, the court of Additional District and Sessions Judge R S Attri on Tuesday convicted all the five accused.
The conviction of the five is one of the fastest rape trials in the history of district courts. The quantum of their sentence will be announced on Wednesday.
The five, all in their early 20s,have been convicted under sections 376 2g gangrape,365 abduction with intention to confinement,366 abduction and 473 possessing counterfeit seal of the IPC.
The pronouncement of orders has come within just eight days of the deposition of the victim before the court and within a month of framing of the charges by the court against the accused.
The German woman had appeared in the court on January 16 and 17 and supported the prosecution theory.
The case was heard everyday since then, and the prosecution evidence was recorded in three days. The defence recorded its trial in the next two days, and the final arguments were heard on Tuesday following which the orders were pronounced in the evening.
Those who have been convicted are Sukhwinder Singh alias Sukhi,Manvir Singh Jolly,Pankaj Punia,Sompal and Harpreet Singh alias Dalli. They belong to Haryana.
The basic plea put forward by the prosecution was that the German being a foreign national had no reason to implicate any one falsely in the case. They corroborated it with medical evidence and the victims statement. The verdict went in our favour, said public prosecutor Manu Kakkar who was specially hired for the case. We are very happy that the trial was completed in eight days. Its a rare case of such a speedy rape trial, added Manu Kakkar.
