An Indian-origin British policeman and his accomplices have become the subject of so much ridicule for their amateurish plot to rob an elderly banker that their exertions have been compared in court to an Ealing comedy.
Police constable Harish Dubb has been jailed for six years while his accomplices were given various sentences at the Maidstone Crown Court for trying to rob Joginder Singh in Gravesend,Kent. Dubb,22 was one of four men who, together with a 15-year-old boy, targeted Joginder Singh wearing balaclavas and masks. The gang had earlier visited Singhs home, and had seen wads of currency notes.
Dubb was the driver of the getaway car the gang used. They were in an easily-traceable car,had no weapons and were seen fleeing the house by workmen in the street who noted the cars registration number.
One of the gang members had his mask dislodged during the robbery in July last year, while the teenager was restrained by Singhs son.
Moreover,CCTV cameras were positioned outside the Gravesend homes of Dubb, and 22-year-old accomplice Gurveer Rai,easily giving them away, reports from Gravesend said.
The footage was later used to disprove in every sense of the word the stories they gave to the police following their arrests. Dubb was also distinguished from the others by a limp.
