Launching the partys election campaign from his hometown Tiruvarur,DMK president and Chief Minister M Karunanidhi on Wednesday expanded the list of beneficiaries of his largesse if he is voted back to power.
Having promised a laptop to first-year government college students from BC/MBC/SC/ST communities in the DMK manifesto,Karunanidhi expanded it to all students irrespective of their communities. Like all the schemes that the DMK government has implemented, there should not be any differentiation even in this, he said.
In another smaller measure, the age limit to obtain free bus pass has been reduced from 60 to 58 years, the retirement age.
At a massive campaign meeting attended by leaders of all alliance parties,Karunanidhi said that in the past five years,he had done things he had not even promised like Kalaignar Housing Scheme. It did not figure in the last 2006 manifesto, but was discussed and initiated. The government is constructing several lakhs houses to phase out huts in Tamil Nadu, he said.
He also promised to tighten the law and order situation in the state, something that the AIADMK is perceived to do better. Karunanidhi assured that his government would be strict with those involved in rice and sand smuggling, and katta panchayat or kangaroo courts the parallel legal system run by goondas.
Karunanidhi said it was his dream to be the MLA of Tiruvarur,a constituency that was in the reserved list till recently. He was first elected as a member of the Assembly from neighbouring Kulithalai 54 years ago,the first of his 11 victories. Karunanidhi is yet to lose an election.
After all these years,I am back in your lap. I want to hold your hands when I walk back to the Assembly. I want to be your MLA, said Karunanidhi.
