Disco dancing

Item numbers have just got bigger

Every filmmaker wants to include an item number in his film today. The song has little to do with the film and is generally there to showcase a beautiful actress in revealing clothes dancing to an upbeat and sexually-provocative number with racy imagery and suggestive lyrics.

Upto the ‘70s there were vamps like Helen and Bindu who provided this musical entertainment. But soon heroines like Zeenat Aman and Parveen Babi broke the monopoly and didn’t mind exploring the sexy numbers.

Cut to the scenario today. It’s unbelievable but filmmakers are all spoilt for choices for an item number. They can not only explore fusion bhangra, jazz or rap, they have spectacular sets, costumes, special effects, slick photography and choreography. And to top it all, leading actresses are ready to put on their dancing shoes and titillate the audience.

What surprised the audience further was that it is no longer restricted to the girls,as the guys too want to have their fun and do the jig. And all the big stars are game.

Abhishek Bachchan became the first item boy in Rakth and Shah Rukh Khan in Krazzy 4 and today Ranbir Kapoor didn’t hesitate to do a fast-paced tapori number for Chillar Party. But the big surprise was when Aamir Khan gave in to the temptation and was quite kicked when he took the curtain off his item number in Delhi Belly. He left no stone unturned to include the disco look, feel and moves in his number Disco fighter.

But if you ask me who I would root for when it comes to these special numbers,it would be the girl gang. There is so much more to cheer when a Madhuri Dixit gyrates to Dhak dhak,or when a Shilpa Shetty dances to a Main aayi hoon UP Bihar lootne,Sonali Bendre moves to a sensuous Hamma hamma. Or there are Bipasha Basu’s raw and sexy Beedi jalaile,Munni’s slow and sultry moves,Katrina’s smooth midriff and the long-limbed Deepika Padukone. Guys. you are good, but girls are better!
