Not satisfied with the steps taken by the BJP government so far,right-wing organisations and the Congress continued to seek removal of Jail Minister Jagdish Devda over the release of SIMI activists even as the defence lawyer prepared himself to challenge the order that sent the convicts back to jail.

Deputy jailer Sanjeev Kumar, who was in-charge of the Khachrod sub-jail,wondered why he was suspended for following a government amnesty order on January 26. Had I not released the prisoners they would have initiated a departmental inquiry, he said.

The government had on Friday issued a circular which said convicts jailed under the Unlawful Activities Act and offences under IPC Sections 124 C and 153 C will not be considered for pardon. Defence lawyer Santosh Choradia said the order was faulty in that it did not mention that it would be implemented with retrospective effect. He said he would challenge the order in the High Court.
