Sacked treasurer of the Commonwealth Games Organising Committee M Jayachandran,who was called for questioning in connection with the alleged irregularities in the Queen8217;s Baton Relay QBR and other transactions,was arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation CBI on Sunday evening.
The arrest comes almost a week after T S Darbari and Sanjay Mohindroo,former officials of the Games Organising Committee OC and close aides of chairman Suresh Kalmadi,were arrested on charges of bungling in the QBR in London last year.
The accused OC officials,in conspiracy with the London-based AM Cars/Vans and its Director Ashish Patel,awarded work to the company at exorbitant rates without following the standard tender process,sources said.
8220;Jayachandran was called for questioning and arrested after evidence came in during the interrogation of Mohindroo and Darbari. The agency also has ample evidence against Jayachandran through the various documents recovered from the OC office,8221; a CBI source said.
Officials said the OC suffered a loss of approximately Rs 3.5 crore in awarding the contract to AM Films and AM Cars for the QBR.
Jayachandran role as treasurer has been under the scanner due to alleged foreign exchange violations. He has also been summoned in the past by the Enforcement Directorate under the provisions of the Foreign Exchange Management Act FEMA.
