CPM leaders killing: CID submits reports

Public prosecutor Debasish Roy said that the CID has made significant progress into the investigation by arresting 11 of the 22 accused in the case.

The CID on Friday submitted two reports to the Calcutta High Court on the progress of the investigation into the killing of two CPM leaders in West Bengals Burdwan district in February. After going through the reports and the case diary,a Division Bench of Chief Justice Jaynarayan Patel and Justice Sombudha Chakraborty asked the CID to file another status report on the investigation on May 4.

Public prosecutor Debasish Roy said that the CID has made significant progress into the investigation by arresting 11 of the 22 accused in the case.

The rest are absconding and a petition has been moved in the criminal court for issuance of arrest warrants against the absconders,Roy said.

On February 22,former CPM MLA Pradip Tah and his party colleague Kamal Gayen were lynched near Burdwan. Tah8217;s family had accused Trinamool Congress workers behind the killings. After hearing three writ petitions filed by locals,the Calcutta High Court on March 2 directed the CID to take up the probe.

Trial begins in corruption case against Jaitly

A Delhi court on Friday commenced the trial against former Samata Party president Jaya Jaitly and two others in a corruption case relating to a defence deal. The case against Jaitly is one amongst a series of sting operations conducted by Tehelka in 2000,codenamed Operation Westend,to expose corruption in defence deals.

Meanwhile,Jaitly Friday moved an application to travel abroad. The court has asked the CBI to file a reply to it and listed the matter for May 1.
