A head constable died and 23 lower-rung policemen fell ill after they fainted while taking a physical test for promotion to sub-inspector rank at Meerut,Kanpur and Sitapur police lines on Wednesday.
While the head constable died and and seven policemen fell ill in Meerut,14 fainted in Kanpur and three in Sitapur,said IG Law amp; Order A P Maheshwari.
He said eight policemen fainted at the Meerut police lines this noon and were rushed to the district hospital,where PAC head constable Agrez Singh 38 died during treatment. Singh was posted with 44 Battalion PAC in Meerut.
Similarly,the 14 policemen fainted in Kanpur and three in Sitapur while appearing in the 10-km run. The policemen had to complete the distance in 75 minutes,Maheshwari added.
The UP Police Promotion and Recruitment Board chairman V C Goel said the policemen attending the physical test had already been told they should appear only if they were fit.
About 55,000 policemen had applied for the post of 5,000 SIs and 3,800 had qualified in the written test. Those who qualify the physical test would have to take the group discussion test to get se;ected,he added.
