Coal row report: Law Minister must quit, says BJP

The BJP has said it will raise the issue in Parliament

Upping the ante against the UPA government, the BJP on Monday demanded Law Minister Ashwani Kumars resignation following The Indian Express report that the CBIs status report on the coal blocks controversy was vetted by him and officials of the Prime Ministers Office PMO.

There is no denial that the meeting between the law minister and CBI director did not happen. We demand that Ashwani Kumar should resign and an SIT be constituted under the auspices of the Supreme Court for investigating the coal scam thoroughly and properly, BJP spokesperson Meenakshi Lekhi said.

This incident has exposed how the CBI is misused, said Lekhi, adding that the government and CBI had violated the Supreme Courts directive on not sharing the status report with the political executive. The BJP has said it will raise the issue in Parliament.

Meanwhile,an NGO,Common Cause, filed an application in the Supreme Court on Monday demanding a probe by a special investigation team SIT into the Centres unlawful interference in the CBI investigation and reported dilution of the status report.

The said revelations unequivocally show the pervasive nature of the control of the government on the CBI. Even in a major corruption scandal like this one regarding coal block allocations that is being monitored by this court, the government is able to blatantly influence the investigation8230; The interference of the government is not only illegal and criminal,it also amounts to criminal contempt, said the NGO,which is a petitioner in the coal allocation case.
