With sections of both the Congress and BJP voicing their objection to a caste-based census, members of civil society have started mobilising support to discard caste from the 2011 Census.

A group of citizens, under the banner of Sabal Bharat, has launched a Meri Jaati Hindustani campaign to mobilise the public to put pressure on the government against conducting a caste-based census.

The campaign, patronised by former Lok Sabha speakers Somnath Chatterjee and Balram Jakhar, along with former union ministers Vasant Sathe,Ram Jethmalani and Jagmohan,is being convened by senior journalist Ved Pratap Vaidik.

The campaign core group on Saturday released its mission statement, reminding the goverment that the makers of the Constitution had abolished untouchability and separate electorates, because they realised the divisive potential of caste and community.

I have been invited by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to lead a delegation voicing the viewpoint of concerned citizens regarding the Census, Vaidik said.
