A function organised by seven chambers of commerce on Tuesday in the memory of the late Jyoti Basu left a few red faces not only in the ruling Left but also among the industrialists. While three out of top four CPM leaders who were invited kept away from the function, the only leader present, state secretary Biman Bose, reiterated at the meet that workers and employees would have the right to strike work as part of their fighting tool.

Those who kept away were Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, state Industry Minister Nirupam Sen and Politburo member Sitaram Yechury. While their absence led an industry representative to remark that the outpourings of sympathy by party comrades for the departed leader seem to have dried up too soon, the political incorrectness of Bose8217;s remark was also not lost given that it was a function organised by the industry.
