NRI womans murder: Briton jailed for life

LONDON: In a widely followed case,a British solicitor has been jailed for life for arranging the contract killing of his NRI business partner to claim 1.5 million insurance to pay off his debts. John Cort,a solicitor in Leicester,hired Brain Farrell,a hit-man from Bayswater in west London,to kill 51-year-old Vina Patel. Patels body was found at the bottom of the stairs at the office of Cort and Co solicitors on January 15,2009. Cort tried to make the death look like an accident. The Nottingham Crown Court on Friday sentenced Cort to a life term with a minimum term of 29 years. Farrell was jailed for a minimum 27 years.

Thai PM lifts curfew,emergency stays

Bangkok: Thailands Prime Minister lifted a nighttime curfew in Bangkok and other areas on Saturday,saying that order has been restored 10 days after a violent confrontation with anti-government protesters killed more than a dozen people and left parts of the capital in flames. Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva,however,said a state of emergency would remain in force until security officials determined that it was safe to lift it.

President Bingu wa Mutharika announced the pardon,saying it was on humanitarian grounds only.
