Fonseka reveals 10-point poll pledge

COLOMBO: Launching his 10-point election campaign with a rally in Kandy,Sri Lankas Opposition presidential candidate Sarath Fonseka on Friday pledged to re-establish democracy,create a free media culture and strengthen laws to fight graft. Fonseka also pledged to do away with executive presidency. Meanwhile,Rajapaksa strongly defended executive presidency,saying it was only its provisions that had helped him to wipe out Tamil Tiger insurgency.

Karzai to keep half his cabinet

KABUL: Afghan President Hamid Karzai wants to retain some of his key cabinet officials who have been embraced by the international community as he begins his second term and will replace two ministry heads linked to corruption,three officials in the Afghan government said on Friday. He also plans to keep on board a legendary warlord who holds political sway in the west,the officials said.

Islamabad: Nine leading Pakistani clerics who declared suicide attacks as un-Islamic,fell seriously ill after consuming halwa served to them,prompting the police to investigate whether it was an attempt to murder them. The clerics,who were were admitted for emergency treatment,remained semi-conscious for almost 10 hours.
