Chinese activist freed after 11 year jail term
BEIJING: A Chinese activist has been released from prison after completing an 11-year sentence for alleged subversion,a human rights group said on Wednesday. Wu Yilong was one of dozens of dissidents detained in 1998 after attempting to register the China Democracy Party in the eastern province of Zhejiang. The attempt was crushed six months later with leading organisers sentenced to up to 13 years in prison,most on the charge of incitement to subvert state power. Wu,43,was released on Monday,said the Chinese Human Rights Defenders.
Indian-American loses NY primary
NEW YORK: Indian-American Democrat Reshma Saujani lost New Yorks Democratic Congressional primary to veteran Carolyn B Maloney after a vicious contest in which the two candidates took potshots at each other. Congress Representative Maloney has taken 81 per cent of the votes against her 34-year-old opponent. Saujani might have garnered only 19 per cent of the votes,but many observers described her as a tough challenger to Maloney.
Salahi says she has multiple sclerosis
WASHINGTON: Michaele Salahi,who with her husband crashed a White House dinner,said in a new book that she suffers from multiple sclerosis,a potentially debilitating disease that she said she has kept secret for years. Salahi said a bad spell on the night of the White House dinner caused the couple to leave the event early. Written with the couples consent,Cirque Du Salahi offers little new information about the incident last November.
N Korean political meet delayed
SEOUL: North Korea appears to have postponed a meeting believed to be aimed at promoting a son of leader Kim Jong Il,an official said Wednesday,amid speculation that flooding has forced the delay. Analysts believe Kim,68,will use the meet to give his youngest son,Kim Jong Un,a key party post to groom him as his successor. South Koreas point man on North Korea said he believes the meeting didnt take place Wednesday a day the South and Japanese media said would be the starting date.
