Maya for OBC status for Jats
LUCKNOW: Uttar Pradesh CM Mayawati has supported the demand of the Jat community for their inclusion in the category of Other Backward Castes OBC at the national level. Mayawati said going by their socio-economic and educational conditions,the Jat community deserved OBC status. Demanding reservation in government jobs,Jat leaders had stopped water supply from the Upper Ganga Canal in Muradnagar,Ghaziabad,on Sunday night,leading to a water crisis in parts of Delhi.
HC okays recruitment of 35,000 constables
ALLAHABAD: Recalling its order staying recruitment of police constables,the Allahabad High Court Monday ruled that UP could go ahead with the exercise. It,however,asked the state to keep one seat vacant. The HC had on June 8 stayed recruitment of 35,000 constables while hearing a petition filed by one Anuj Dhama,who had claimed he failed in the written test due to errors in the question paper. The vacant seat should be filled subject to the final verdict,the HC said.
MCI bribery: College owner gets bail
DELHI: The Delhi High Court Monday granted bail to Sukhwinder Singh,owner of Gyan Sagar Medical College in Patiala who had allegedly offered Rs 2 crore to former Medical Council of India president Ketan Desai for recognition of the college. The court also granted bail to Kanwaljit Singh,a professor at the college.
SC restores Kanak Bhavan to owners
NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Monday restored possession of Kanak Bhawan in Rambagh Complex in Jaipur to its owners,the erstwhile royals,who had been evicted by Jaipur Development Authority JDA. The court pulled up JDA for taking coercive steps without giving sufficient time to the owners to respond to the notice issued by it.
Lawyers boycott courts in western UP
MUZAFFARNAGAR: Judicial work in western UP was affected on Monday as lawyers boycotted district courts to protest the killing of fellow lawyer Narendra Verma on June 3 in the tehsil court at Mawana in Meerut. Lawyers were agitated over delay in the arrest of those responsible for the murder.
BSP leader accused of extortion
BIJNOR UP: A case of extortion has been registered against local BSP leader Jameel Ahmad and 16 others for allegedly running a parallel court and extracting money from people through its diktats. The case was registered on a complaint filed by one Haji Shamim Ahmad,who alleged the accused forced him to pay a fine of Rs 5,000 after his sons marriage party arrived late at the brides home,police said.

Hearing on ex-IGPs bail plea deferred
CHANDIGARH: A Yamunanagar court Monday adjourned till June 16 the hearing on the anticipatory bail of former Haryana IGP Mahendra Singh Ahlawat,who is accused of molesting a woman lawyer. In his bail plea,Ahlawat has submitted that Section 508 criminal intimidation does not apply in his case. He also said the victim had not moved any court all these years against him.
