LUCKNOW: With 15 more bodies fished out from the Ganga on Tuesday,the death toll in the boat tragedy in Ballia district reached 62. Officials said the overloaded country boat was plying illegally without a license. A case was registered at Haldi police station against boatman Harvansh,who is absconding,for rash navigation of vessel. The boat capsized in the middle of the river on Monday morning.

US cyclist buried in HP,tourists airlifted

SHIMLA: The body of 57-year-old US national J Edward,who died of cardiac arrest in Lahaul and Spiti on June 13,was buried by his friend Peter Michael at Keylong on Tuesday. Edward was on a cycling tour of Himachal Pradesh and had been caught in a snow storm. Meanwhile,17 members of a Maharashtra tourist group who had been stranded at Batal since June 7 were airlifted to Manali and Koksar.

Promotion for 4,500 Punjab policemen

CHANDIGARH: In a morale boosting exercise,the Punjab police has promoted over 4,500 constables and officers to the rank of inspectors to remove stagnancy. It was found that denial of timely promotions due to various administrative hurdles was adversely affecting the morale of the force,Punjab DGP P S Gill said Tuesday.

Woman raped in moving car

JHAJJAR HARYANA: A woman running a beauty parlour was abducted and raped by two unidentified men in a speeding car at Chhuchhakwas village. The victim said she was raped in a moving car,and later abandoned near a school after being threatened against informing the police. The police have registered a case against the accused.
