Two Vidarbha farmers commit suicide

NAGPUR: Two farmers from Vidarbha region have ended their lives with an advocacy group claiming that the number of such cases have risen to 332 this year. Two farmers have committed suicide in the Yavatmal district, a senior official said. The deceased have been identified as Ajabrao Meshram of Shivani village and Ramnna Pedkulwar of Aril village. Meanwhile,Vidarbha Janandolan Samiti claimed three more farmers ended lives in Vidarbha region since Monday.

3 brothers drown in pit near Mithi river

MUMBAI: Three siblings drowned in an open pit near the Mithi river in Kalina on Tuesday afternoon. Eight-year-old twins Abdul Rahim and Abdul Karim and 12-year-old Abdul Aziz were playing in the open area adjacent to the river at Kapadia Nagar on CST Road when the incident took place. The pit was dug up as part of the ongoing Mithi river project being undertaken by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation,under which retaining walls are being built to train the flow of the river.

UP: Held at border,40 sent to Jammu

LUCKNOW: The Uttar Pradesh Police on Tuesday sent a group of 40 people to Jammu who were intercepted at Sonauli immigration check-post in Maharajganj district on Sunday when they were entering the Indian territory from Nepal. They were questioned by IB,RAW and state intelligence officials. Gorakhpur Zone IG Bhavesh Kumar Singh said the group,which included 11 men,seven women and 22 minors,had been sent to Jammu with a police escort.

Warrant against Bhatt,6 others

RAJKOT: The Khambhalia sessions court on Tuesday ordered bailable warrants against suspended DIG Sanjiv Bhatt and six constables in connection with a 1990 custodial death case. Bhatt and the six other policemen failed to appear for a hearing scheduled for Tuesday,after which the court issued the warrants.

Childrens homes: Tougher law ahead

NEW DELHI: The Ministry of Women and Child Development is planning to introduce a penal provision for non-registration of childrens homes in the Juvenile Justice Care and Protection of Children Act,2000. This,it hopes,will subject these homes from which a series of incidents of abuse have been reported in the last few months to stringent scrutiny and monitoring so that the standard of these institutes will improve.

Armyman arrested for rape in Alwar

ALWAR: An Army jawan was arrested for allegedly raping a woman at Alwar railway junctions waiting room,GRP said on Tuesday. Accused Rajesh Kumar 32,posted in Alwar,was held at the station soon after the incident took place on Monday. The 25-year-old victim along with her one-year-old child arrived at the junction from Jaipur on Monday,whereas the Army jawan had gone there for some work, in-charge of GRP Alwar station J C Ram said.

Order on pilots plea reserved

NEW DELHI: The Delhi High Court on Tuesday reserved for May 4 its verdict on a petition by a pilots body of erstwhile domestic carrier Indian Airlines seeking parity with their counterparts at Air India. Indian Commercial Pilots Association had moved the court alleging it had not been dealt with equitably with Indian Pilots Guild IPG,an association of Air Indias pilots.
