SHILLONG: The Meghalaya government has ordered media houses not to report on bandhs and hartals. A notification,issued by the state government and approved by the Cabinet,states that media houses are liable for punishment if they disseminate information on bandhs and hartals. The order comes after the Guahati High Court last week banned bandhs and hartals in Meghalaya and Assam after it heard a PIL filed by Mrinal Talukdar and former Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council KHADC chief executive member H S Shylla.

Militant outfit,Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council HNLC,has,meanwhile,issued a veiled threat to the media houses,saying if they succumbed to the government diktat then it should close down.The mediahouses have expressed concern over this.

Man jailed for not paying maintenance

MUMBAI: Bombay High Court Monday upheld the 44-month jail term given to Manoj Thorat by a lower court for not paying maintenance of Rs 1,000 to his wife as ordered by the court. Thorats wife had filed four cases against him,alleging he never paid a rupee in maintenance despite the courts order. Upholding the lower courts order,Justice Roshan Dalvi observed,The order exemplifies and brings out the stark reality of the agony the wives are required to undergo at the hands of the husbands who disobey orders of maintenance with impunity8230;

Money joins NHRC as secy-general

NEW DELHI: K S Money,a 1976-batch IAS officer of the Rajasthan cadre,has joined as secretary general of the National Human Rights Commission NHRC. Prior to his appointment in the NHRC,he was holding the post of Member,National Highways Authority of India NHAI.

Cold kills 11 deer at Jaipur zoo

JAIPUR: Cold has killed 11 spotted deer at Jaipur Zoo in the past two Wildlife Department officials said Monday. The deer were suffering from suspected pneumonia and despite best efforts could not be saved. Deputy Chief Wildlife Warden,Jaipur Zoo,Y K Sahu said there were sufficient night shelters for deer but these animals prefer to stay under the shade and protection of trees. People for Animals has demanded an inquiry into the deaths.

Maoists blast rail line in Bihar

JEHANABAD: Suspected Maoists blasted a railway track near Nadaul station in Bihars Jehanabad district early Monday morning,disrupting rail traffic for several hours,police said.Around 50 armed Maoists barged into the southern cabin of the station around 2 am and asked the railway employees to vacate it. They then blew up the line,police said. PTI
